MPD: alcohol, drugs suspected in crash

Police said alcohol and drugs are suspected to be factors in a motorcycle crash early Sunday that left a 45-year-old Wailuku man with life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred at 12:01 a.m. on Market Street near Mokuhau Road in Wailuku when an SSR off-road pit bike-style motorcycle was traveling illegally in the roadway southbound on Kahekili Highway, police said. The operator lost control of the motorcycle and struck the raised curbing on the western edge of the intersection.

The operator was ejected from the motorcycle and landed in the roadway, police said.

He was transported by medics to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

The motorcycle operator wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.

Police are continuing to investigate whether speed was a factor in the crash. Vehicle Homicide investigators also will make a final determination on whether alcohol and drugs are factors.

Three people have died in crashes on Maui County roads this year, compared with four at the same time last year.
