A Haiku restaurant was closed and issued a red placard after a health inspection revealed a rodent infestation.
Inspectors observed dead and live rodents on Thursday at Colleen's at 810 Haiku Road, the state Department of Health said Friday.
An initial inspection on July 7 found rodent feces within a storage cabinet but no other indication of rodents. Inspectors discussed multiple holes within the walls and the installation of a door sweep with the owner.
On Thursday, a complaint reported a rodent in the dining room of Colleen's, and a follow-up health inspection revealed seven dead rodents caught in snap and sticky traps in the kitchen and bar areas and three live rodents.
Colleen's closed to the public during the inspection, and the department posted a red "closed" placard in the front window based on the imminent health hazard.
According to the department, Colleen's had been receiving commercial pest control services on a monthly basis prior to the inspection.
The DOH inspector required the following measures to be completed before the restaurant can reopen, including:
• Contracting pest control services that provide rodent control treatments on an at least weekly basis.
• Training staff on and following a written procedure for monitoring and scheduling the rodent traps set out by the restaurant and pest control contractor to monitor the level of rodent activity within the restaurant.
• Having a standard operating procedure for routine cleaning for areas underneath equipment within the kitchen.
• Properly storing all food items within the storage room and kitchen within plastic closed-lid containers.
• Covering or repairing any holes or openings within the structure.
A follow-up inspection is scheduled for July 23.
