Thirteen staff members and two inmates at the Maui Community Correctional Center have active cases of COVID-19, the Department of Public Safety reported Wednesday.
The numbers have increased from the three staff members who had tested positive for COVID as of July 27, when the state Department of Health reported no active inmate cases.
Forty staff members tested negative for COVID-19, the Department of Public Safety reported Wednesday.
The Wailuku jail has designated specific housing units as quarantine areas, according to a Public Safety spokeswoman. She said the quarantine period is dictated by facility health care staff and the state Department of Health.
She said staff who have tested positive for COVID-19 aren't cleared to report to work.
Staff members were required to serve meals to inmates one day, she said, but that is considered a part of an adult correctional officer's duties "based on the physical plant and operational needs of the facility."
During 2nd Circuit Court hearings Wednesday, some inmates were transported to the state courthouse building in Wailuku, while others appeared by videoconference from the jail. Two pretrial inmates weren't allowed to appear by videoconference because they were restricted from leaving their housing because they had COVID symptoms, the jail reported. The quarantine period was reported to be 14 days.
