The deadline is fast approaching to apply for the second phase of Kahului Lani, an affordable senior rental complex developed by Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation.

Kahului Lani will provide seniors ages 55 and over, who earn 60 percent or less of the county median income, with an affordable permanent living option, offering complementary amenities so residents can “age in place,” according to a news release.

The second phase of the Kahului Lani rental housing complex consists of 83 one-bedroom, one-bathroom air-conditioned units, located at 67 School St. in Kahului near the Kahului Public Library. The housing facility is being developed in partnership with GSF LLC. Hale Mahaolu is the property manager for Kahului Lani.

“With the second phase of Kahului Lani near completion, Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation is proud to play a role in assisting Maui County fill the need for affordable senior housing on Maui,” said Catholic Charities Hawai’i CEO and President Rob Van Tassell.

Located across the street from the Kahului Public Library, Foodland and Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, Kahului Lani II features 83 affordable senior housing units available to tenants ages 55 and older. Applications are now available at the Hale Mahaolu office at 200 Hina Ave. The project was developed by Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation and is managed by Hale Mahaolu. To take part in an initial lottery, potential tenants must have their applications turned in by Tuesday. Late applications will be accepted and considered if apartments are still available after the lottery.

The first phase of Kahului Lani consisted of 81 rental units, which opened to tenants in 2020.

Lottery applications to determine tenants at Kahului Lani II will be accepted until Tuesday. Applications can be picked up at Hale Mahaolu’s Kahului office between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 200 Hina Ave.

Only original applications completed and received by the Hale Mahaolu central office no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday will be reviewed for eligibility and entered into a lottery to determine initial occupancy and wait list. Faxed applications will not be accepted. Qualified housing applications received after Tuesday will be added to the initial wait list in the order in which they were received.

Applicants must be at least 55 years of age at the time of application. The target move-in date for initial occupancy is tentatively scheduled for December. Smoking and pets are not permitted on the Kahului Lani grounds.

Incorporated in 1999 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating as a subsidiary of Catholic Charities Hawai’i, the housing development corporation owns, develops and manages real estate properties with the intent to provide affordable housing for the elderly, special needs individuals and other socially or economically disadvantaged persons and families.

Financing for the project was provided by the State Hawaii Housing Finance & Development Corporation, First Hawaiian Bank, HHF LLC and Catholic Charities Housing Development Corporation.
