Hotel’s new pool and improvements approved

The Maui News

The Maui Planning Commission last week voted 9-0 to allow the Wailea Beach Resort — Marriott, Maui to conduct improvements on its property, including installing a new pool and constructing outdoor living spaces for 14 ground floor guestrooms.

The commission granted a special management area use permit and planned development step 2 approval to allow the project to move forward.

But with the commission’s concerns over water use as the island faces a drought, with Upcountry residents under water restrictions and Central and South Maui residents also being asked to conserve, the hotel agreed to scale back its plans for installing “water features” for the 14 outdoor living spaces at its Haleakala Tower.

The commission also added on to other conditions already imposed by the Planning Department, including that the hotel not exceed its water consumption from 2019 with the addition of the proposed project. Another condition requires that the landscaping plan for the project not use invasive species and instead use drought tolerant native species recommended by the Maui County Planting Plan.

The nearly $5 million project involves replacing an existing pond with a new serenity pool and spa area, construction of outdoor living spaces for 14 ground floor guestrooms, construction of a new solar photovoltaic pergola and renovation of a existing towel hut, according to Planning Department documents.

Hotel officials told the commission that they have reduced and continue to seek ways to reduce water consumption over the years.
