Leeward areas of the state, including Maui, Molokai and Lanai, are under a red flag warning until 6 p.m. today as gusty winds, dry fuels and low relative humidity cause elevated fire danger.
The National Weather Service predicted east to northeast trade winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph and humidity of 35 to 45 percent during the afternoon hours.
Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly, the weather service warned. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Meanwhile, a brown water advisory was lifted for South Maui waters on Monday. The state Department of Health issued the advisory from north Kihei to Makena on Wednesday after heavy rains sent stormwater runoff into coastal waters.
