Pies ready to be gobbled up

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

FIRST PHOTO: University of Hawaii Maui College Culinary Arts Program students Chasey Ko’omoa-Sidney (from left), Jennifer Giubardo and Tricha Arquero remove cooled apple pies from cooking trays Tuesday morning in the Pa’ina Building. Their class was scheduled to make 200 pies to sell as a fundraiser for the program. They all sold out. Along with apple pies, they also made pecan, pumpkin and pumpkin cheesecake. Giubardo said working on such a scale was an eye-opener. “We’re all first-year culinary arts students,” she said. “We started learning how to bake pies this week. It’s a great program.” UH-Maui Culinary Arts Program students were also set to make 600 Thanksgiving dinners Wednesday while teaming with the Salvation Army for a Thanksgiving dinner drive-thru distribution.
