Transport of bridge parts to disrupt traffic

Delivery of bulky bridge parts is expected to cause traffic disruptions in Upcountry and East Maui on Tuesday, the county Department of Public Works and Goodfellow Brothers LLC announced.
A lowboy truck carrying an oversized load of 6-foot-by-45-foot bulky bridge components will leave Waikapu for Keokea Park in the pre-dawn hours of Tuesday along with leading and trailing escort vehicles.
From Keokea, the convoy will proceed through Ulupalakua, Piilani Highway and Hana Highway bound for Mile Marker 43 between Hana and Kaupo. The estimated time of arrival is noon. Traffic is expected to be impeded to accommodate the oversized load.
Drivers should choose an alternate route or anticipate long delays due to traffic disruption, the county said. Visitors planning to visit Hana that day should return to Central Maui by way of Hana Highway, not Piilani Highway, to avoid the area.
The Department of Public Works is installing a temporary pre-engineered steel bridge over the existing Mahalawa Bridge and constructing paved ramps and guardrails at both approaches to the bridge.
