WAILUKU -- A Haiku woman was arrested for allegedly shoplifting from a Kahului store after the store owner recognized her at another store several days later.
Alena Kahana Cravalho, 25, was charged with second-degree theft by shoplifting.
The theft occurred Nov. 2 at Sew Special at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. When the owner confronted a woman and man who left the store, they dropped a bag containing merchandise including face masks, clutch bags and blankets and fled, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charge. The stolen items were valued at $1,625.
On Monday afternoon, the store owner saw the suspected shoplifter, later identified as Kahana Cravalho, at a store on East Kaahumanu Avenue in Kahului, according to the declaration. Police arrested Kahana Cravalho there.
During her initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage asked that bail remain at $1,000 for Kahana Cravalho. She has a prior conviction for fourth-degree theft, Littlepage said.
Deputy Public Defender David Pullman asked for Kahana Cravalho to be released on supervision. She grew up on Maui, has been employed for three months and has a young child, Pullman said.
Judge Chris Dunn ordered that Kahana Cravalho be released on supervision. She was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to report for random testing. She was ordered to stay away from Sew Special and its employees.
