Maui County's free COVID-19 testing schedule will be modified for the holiday season, except for Kihei, the county announced Tuesday.
Testing sites will be closed Dec. 25 for Christmas and Jan. 1 for New Year's Day. After Jan. 2, free testing will resume the normal schedule -- Monday and Saturday in Lahaina, Tuesday and Thursday in Kihei and Wednesday and Saturday in Kahului.
"I encourage folks to be tested before holiday gatherings," Mayor Michael Victorino said in a news release. "Early information on the omicron variant suggests it spreads rapidly, but with milder severity. Public health officials are predicting it will become Hawaii's dominant strain sometime in January, so spread by asymptomatic and breakthrough cases remains a concern. Please protect yourself and others by taking a free COVID-19 test."
Minit Medical's modified holiday testing schedule for Maui will be as follows:
• Central Maui: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays as usual and Dec. 24 and 31, Kahului Testing Trailer, 348 Lehuakona St.
• South Maui: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Kihei Testing Trailer, 1280 S. Kihei Rd.
• West Maui: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 and Mondays as usual, Lahaina Civic Center, 1840 Honoapiilani Highway.
• Upcountry: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 24 and 31, Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center, 91 Pukalani St.
Appointments are mandatory and can be booked online at minitmed.com/pre-register-maui-covid-19 or by phone at (808) 667-6161. Testing is open to anyone at no charge.
