Maui County will distribute more COVID-19 rapid self-test kits from Monday through Wednesday at drive-thru sites in West, Upcountry and South Maui.
Kits will be given out beginning at 4 p.m. Monday at the Lahaina Aquatic Center, 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Kulamalu Park parking lot (Saturday farmer's market area) in Pukalani and at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the South Maui Community Park Gym in Kihei.
Limited supplies will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with kits limited to one per vehicle. Each BinaxNOW kit contains two tests that provide results in 15 minutes.
The county distributed about 1,200 test kits during a drive-thru event in Wailuku last month. Kits have also been given out to residents of Lanai and Hana and to nonprofit partners serving frail and elderly residents and underserved communities. Work is ongoing to provide test kits to Molokai residents as soon as possible, the county said.
"These test kits are meant to help underserved residents who have had difficulty scheduling appointments for testing at many sites throughout Maui County," Mayor Michael Victorino said in a news release Friday. "We are especially concerned about those who have COVID-19 symptoms and need to check, quickly, if they have been infected. If they are positive, they can isolate themselves and seek appropriate medical attention. Family members or others in close contact with a positive individual should get tested as soon as possible."
Testing is recommended for anyone who might have COVID-19 symptoms. Residents can check with a local pharmacy on the availability of at-home test kits or visit mauinuistrong.info.
"The best protection against COVID-19 is to get vaccinated, and then boosted when eligible," Victorino said. "Everyone should follow hygiene protocols and stay away from large gatherings, especially indoors with poor ventilation."
