Six new confirmed positive COVID-19 staff cases were reported at the Maui Community Correctional Center, where the staff COVID count was eight on Tuesday, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
One previously positive employee recovered and returned to work Tuesday, the department reported.
"The Department of Health is conducting contact tracing and investigation, but it is safe to say that the preliminary cause appears to be from the rapid community spread of the virus across the state," according to a Department of Public Safety statement.
Employees who test positive are instructed by the Health Department to isolate at home until they are cleared to return to work.
One inmate case also was reported this week at the Wailuku jail.
The inmate was recently admitted to the jail, where new admissions "go straight into a mandatory intake quarantine," according to the Department of Public Safety.
The inmate, who was transported to the jail after an initial court appearance Dec. 30 from the cellblock at the courthouse, wasn't available for a scheduled court hearing Tuesday, according to court officials.
As of Monday, there were 306 inmates at the jail, which has a design capacity of 209 and operational capacity of 301.
