One inmate and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Maui Community Correctional Center, the state Department of Public Safety reported Monday.
The positive test results followed a report Dec. 27 that another Wailuku jail employee had tested positive for COVID-19.
The recent positive tests were the first reported since Oct. 14, when no COVID cases were reported at the jail.
On Monday, the department announced a $25 incentive for fully vaccinated state inmates who choose to receive a booster shot. The payment is deposited into the inmate's spendable trust account.
The incentive follows a $50 incentive offered last year to inmates in state custody starting March 3 who are fully vaccinated while in custody.
"The continuing goal of this initiative is to get as many inmates as possible vaccinated," Tommy Johnson, deputy director for corrections, said in a news release. "This will help ensure their health and safety, as well as that of our dedicated staff."
The department requested and received approval for $615,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 funds to be specifically used as an incentive initiative for offenders in custody. So far $146,400 has been expended.
