A man who had been released after posting bail in a pending case was arrested for similar crimes last week when he allegedly fled from police in a stolen vehicle, a deputy prosecutor said.
Micah Gouveia-Sanchez, 19, of Kahului was charged with first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and second-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle after he was arrested early Friday.
During his initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto asked for bail to be increased from $3,000 to $15,000 for Gouveia-Sanchez.
He had posted $15,000 bail to be released in the pending case before police tried to stop him in the stolen 1999 white Honda sedan at the Safeway Hookele gas station in Kahului on Thursday, Yoshimoto said.
"The defendant didn't stop," he said. "He drove in the wrong direction. He drove over a delineator."
Before fleeing, Gouveia-Sanchez "turned around and revved his engine" and later told police he did so to "taunt" officers, Yoshimoto said.
When police apprehended Gouveia-Sanchez at Ross in Kahului, he refused to leave the vehicle and had to be physically removed, Yoshimoto said.
After Gouveia-Sanchez agreed to a search, police reported finding a glass pipe containing methamphetamine and a shaved key in the car, Yoshimoto said.
In his other pending case stemming from his arrest in September, Gouveia-Sanchez has pleaded not guilty to first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, two counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, two counts of driving without a license, third-degree theft and two counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.
Gouveia-Sanchez asked for bail to remain at $3,000, with Deputy Public Defender Andres Tobar noting the defendant hasn't been convicted.
Judge Chris Dunn set bail at $3,400.
Gouveia-Sanchez was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to report for supervision and random testing if he posts bail. He was ordered to stay away from Maui Sands condominium at 3559 Lower Honoapiilani Road in Lahaina, the location that the car was stolen from.
