WAILUKU -- A man and woman were arrested for allegedly stealing sunglasses from a store in Wailea three times this month.
Jaimie Alo, 25, of Pukalani and Julia Toro, 31, of Kahului were each charged with two counts of second-degree theft and third-degree theft.
The shoplifting incidents occurred Jan. 5, 7 and 14 at Sunglass Hut at The Shops at Wailea, with both defendants seen on surveillance video, Deputy Prosecutor Brant Yoshimoto said during their initial appearances Monday in Wailuku District Court.
Alo is charged with unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle in a pending case, Yoshimoto said.
He said both Alo and Toro also are pending investigation on drug charges.
While the prosecution asked for bail to remain at $2,200 each for Alo and Toro, they asked to be released on supervision.
Toro has no prior record and has a medical condition that caused her to be concerned about being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center, said Deputy Public Defender Emily Collins.
Judge Blaine Kobayashi granted the defense request to release Toro on supervision.
In ordering that Alo be released on supervision, Judge Chris Dunn said that despite "some aggravating factors," including Alo's pending criminal case, "there are overriding practical considerations regarding overcrowding at the jail and a COVID surge there."
Both Alo and Toro were ordered to stay away from The Shops at Wailea.
