Kihei man charged with attempted murder after reported assault

He is accused of threatening to kill woman; judge sets bail at $500K

A Kihei man was arrested Monday after allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill a woman during a “violent rage” that began when she accidentally spilled water on him, a deputy prosecutor said.

Michael Corbin, 41, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of felony abuse, first-degree terroristic threatening and first-degree assault.

During his initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Elizabeth Nardi asked for bail to be increased from $6,000 set by police for two charges to $1 million.

She said Corbin had been drinking and passed out on the couch before waking up at 1:30 a.m. Monday at his residence and yelling for the woman to bring him water. She slipped and some of the water spilled on him, which started his “violent rage,” Nardi said.

She said the woman reported that Corbin threw her to the ground and back and forth on the couch numerous times and strangled her at least six times.

She described seeing stars and seeing him holding his hands on her throat, Nardi said.

“When officers responded several hours later, they were able to see visible bruising on her neck and face,” Nardi said.

She said that during the “two-hour assault and torture,” the woman reported that Corbin threatened to “cut her into pieces and feed her to the tiger shark.”

At one point, the woman told police Corbin had her on her knees with her hands behind her back and made her beg for forgiveness, Nardi said.

She said that after a few hours, Corbin calmed down and told the woman she could sleep in the dog bed.

Later, he said she could sleep in the regular bed, where he forced her into sexual acts, Nardi said.

“The only reason she complied was because she thought she was going to be killed,” Nardi said. “She repeatedly stated that he told her he was going to kill her.”

Nardi said Corbin’s criminal history from Colorado shows felony assault convictions, including with a deadly weapon. He was arrested Oct. 9, 2012, outside a bar after he reportedly got an AR-15 rifle out of his car following an argument, pointed the rifle at three people and used the butt of the weapon to hit one person in the head, Nardi said. Then Corbin reversed his car into another vehicle, Nardi said.

Deputy Public Defender David Pullman asked for bail to remain at $6,000 for Corbin, saying he works as superintendent for a condominium project in Kihei.

Judge Chris Dunn cited the seriousness of the offenses alleged and the additional charges in setting bail at $500,000. If he posts bail to be released, Corbin was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to stay away from the woman and the residence. He also was ordered to surrender any firearms and ammunition.
