WAILUKU -- A man was arrested after he allegedly brandished a knife when a Kahului restaurant employee wouldn't give him coffee without payment Thursday afternoon.
Raymond Delos Santos, 55, of Kihei was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening.
According to a declaration filed in court to support the charge, Delos Santos entered the McDonald's at 340 Dairy Road shortly after 1 p.m. and ordered a cup of coffee.
After the cashier told him the amount he owed, the defendant said he didn't have any money, Deputy Prosecutor Peter Hanano said during Delos Santos' initial appearance Friday in Wailuku District Court.
When the cashier wouldn't give him the coffee without payment, Delos Santos brandished a knife with a 10-inch blade, holding it above his head and yelling at the employee while glaring at her, Hanano said.
He said the cashier, who was about 3 feet away from Delos Santos, was frightened.
She jumped back from the counter and police were called, Hanano said.
Police reported that Delos Santos was still holding the knife when officers arrived at the restaurant.
Delos Santos was arrested at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
Saying the defendant was a danger, Hanano asked for bail to be increased from $1,000 to $5,000 for Delos Santos.
Deputy Public Defender Andres Tobar asked for bail to be kept the same or reduced, saying Delos Santos has a residence in Wailuku and wasn't working.
Judge Blaine Kobayashi granted the prosecution's request to increase bail to $5,000. Delos Santos was ordered to stay away from the McDonald's and to have no contact with the employee.
