WAILUKU -- A man who allegedly fled from police after he was seen operating a stolen moped was arrested Wednesday after he was found hiding in a Kihei parking garage and bit an officer, according to police.
Mico Moncalian, 30, of Waihee was charged with first-degree assault against a law enforcement officer, first-degree unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
During his initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage asked for bail to remain at $3,200 for Moncalian.
The rented moped was one of two reported stolen Tuesday night from a Kihei condominium complex, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges. Moncalian was seen operating one of the mopeds before police chased, then lost sight of him, according to police. He was located on the fourth floor of a parking garage and allegedly bit the officer on his hand while being arrested Wednesday morning.
Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for Moncalian to be released on supervision, saying he works cleaning condominiums.
Littlepage said Moncalian has 20 convictions for contempt of court, four for failure to appear and one for fourth-degree theft.
Judge Chris Dunn kept bail at $3,200.
