1 min read

A man was pronounced dead after he was found in the ocean when a small boat capsized Thursday evening at Maliko Bay, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Fire and rescue crews were dispatched at 6:16 p.m. after a report that a small boat had capsized on the western side of the bay with two people aboard. When crews arrived, one person had made it to shore but the other was missing in the water.

Bystanders had paddled out to the boat and located the missing man, who was facedown in the water, the Fire Department reported. Rescue firefighters aboard the Fire Department's Air One helicopter picked up the man and transported him to the boat ramp at Maliko Bay.

There, firefighters and medics tried to revive the man but were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead, according to the Fire Department.

The boat was about 300 yards offshore in windy, choppy seas with 4- to 8-foot surf, the Fire Department reported.

Paia firefighters also responded.
