Road work to close part of Piilani Highway for three nights

The Maui News

For three nights starting today, Piilani Highway will close between Kaonoulu Street and Piikea Avenue in both directions for temporary striping and barrier installations, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The closures will take place from 8 p.m. today through 5 a.m. Friday and from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night Friday through Sunday morning.

Drivers will be detoured to South Kihei Road.

The work will prepare the intersection for Phase 1 of the multilane roundabout the state is planning for Piilani Highway.

During Phase 1 construction, Piilani Highway between Kaonoulu Street and Piikea Avenue will be three lanes, and the center lane will be coned for contraflow to allow for two southbound (Kihei-bound) lanes between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. Between 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the contraflow lane will be open in the northbound (Kahului-bound) direction.

Kulanihakoi Street at its intersection with Piilani Highway also will be right-turn in, right-turn out during Phase 1, which is estimated to be completed by August 2022.

Drivers should plan ahead and allow for extra travel time, DOT said. Emergency vehicles and first responders will not be let through the work zone.
