State seeks to fund projects that encourage alternative modes of transportation

State officials are calling for project proposals that would encourage biking, walking and other alternative modes of transportation.

The Department of Transportation Highways Division is seeking applications and requests for information for the Transportation Alternatives Program funding for fiscal year 2022-26. The program provides planning, design and construction funding for projects that encourage the use and enhance the experience of alternative modes of transportation, such as biking, walking, transit and ride-sharing, according to a department news release Tuesday.

Eligible projects include on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle routes and facilities, improving nondriver (e.g. children, elderly, handicapped, rural) access to public transportation, enhanced safety features, community improvement activities and environmental mitigation.

Entities eligible to receive program funds include:

• Local governments.

• Regional transportation authorities.

• Transit agencies.

• Natural resource or public land agencies.

• School districts, local education agencies or schools.

• Tribal governments.

• Nonprofits.
