Court suspends Maui attorney

Maui attorney Michael Collins was suspended from practicing law on an interim basis Tuesday by the Hawaii Supreme Court.

The court found “sufficient evidence in the record to demonstrate that Collins has committed multiple violations of the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct and poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the public,” according to a news release from the Office of Disciplinary Counsel.

The interim suspension will remain in effect until final disposition of the disciplinary proceedings, the news release said.

Collins is prohibited from accepting new retainers or acting as an attorney for others in cases or legal matters. He is required to notify all of his clients and attorneys for adverse parties in pending litigation about his suspension. He also was required to return to clients papers and property that they’re entitled to and advance payment of fees he hasn’t earned.

Collins, 43, was admitted to the Hawaii bar in 2008. He is a graduate of American University, Washington College of Law, in the District of Columbia.
