Two people who were killed when the car they were sleeping in was hit by a pickup truck early Sunday were identified as Wil Ruigrok, 52, originally from Iowa, and Laura Romero, 47, originally from California.
The crash occurred at 4:05 a.m. on North Kihei Road about 2.2 miles from Honoapiilani Highway, police said.
A 2020 Toyota Tacoma pickup was traveling southeast on the road when it drifted onto the shoulder and collided into the rear of a white 2003 Nissan Sentra that was parked on the shoulder, police said.
Ruigrok and Romero, who were asleep in the car when the crash occurred, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The Tacoma driver, a 21-year-old Kihei man, was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room to be treated for minor injuries, police said.
