Winners announced for small business awards

A baker, a farmer and the head of an equipment rental company were among the business owners honored at the 2021 Mayor’s Small Business Awards on Wednesday.

The postponed awards ceremony was held at the Maui Beach Hotel Rainbow Ballroom and honored outstanding for-profit and nonprofit organizations with 100 or fewer employees, according to a news release from the Maui Chamber of Commerce.

The winners were:

• Young Small Business Person of the Year: Heidi Watanabe, Mountain View Bounty Farms and Watanabe Vegetable Processing.

• Outstanding Nonprofit Business: Joyce Kawakami and Scott Hopkins, Feed My Sheep.

• Exceptional Small Business of the Year (10 or fewer employees): Mitzi Toro, The Maui Cookie Lady.

• Exceptional Small Business of the Year (11 to 39 employees): Angela Leone, Coconut Condos.

• Lifetime Achievement Award: Ryan Ouye, Service Rentals & Supplies Inc. The award is open to any individual doing business in Maui County for more than 20 years.

In addition to honoring the 2021 nominees and winners, the event also recognized those in attendance who were nominated or won at the 2020 awards ceremony, which was held virtually.
