Piilani Highway is open and passable for four-wheel-drive vehicles after Maui County road crews in Hana worked to clean up and repair the area between Kaupo and Kipahulu, the county announced Wednesday.
Electronic sign boards with warning messages in Hana and Ulupalakua have been removed.
Portions of the highway were forced to close following heavy rains, flooding and washouts earlier this month.
Although the road is now open and passable, drivers should still exercise extra caution in the Kaupo and Kipahulu areas, the county said. The 5-mile section of unpaved road is rough and very dusty, so four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. Visitors to Hana are advised to return to Central Maui via Paia instead of Kipahulu.
