The state Department of Health is investigating a report of acute pediatric hepatitis in a Maui child under 10 years old.
The child was hospitalized for several days with abdominal pain and fever at the end of April. An extensive medical investigation was performed, with a number of laboratory test results outstanding, the department said Monday.
No cause had been determined. DOH said it is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify the cause.
In late April, the CDC issued a nationwide health alert about a cluster of children identified with hepatitis and adenovirus infection. The agency said it was working with the Alabama Department of Public Health to investigate the cluster of nine cases and asked physicians around the country to report any suspected cases of hepatitis of unknown origin.
Symptoms of hepatitis, or inflammation of the liver, include fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine, light-colored stools, joint pain and jaundice, according to the CDC. It can be caused by virusus.
