Man charged with robbery of truck after high-speed chase

WAILUKU — A man who allegedly drove away in a truck while the owner was holding onto the vehicle was arrested early Tuesday after a high-speed chase from Maalaea to Kapalua.

Stevens Hirashima, 32, of Wailuku was charged with second-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle.

During Hirashima’s initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Karen Droscoski asked for bail to be increased from $6,000 set by police to $20,000, based on the charges.

She said Hirashima allegedly tried to steal a vehicle in the middle of the night from a house on Olinda Road in Makawao. The owner heard the truck starting, saw it pulling out of his driveway and tried to stop Hirashima by grabbing onto the vehicle, Droscoski said.

She said Hirashima kept driving while the owner was holding onto the truck.

The vehicle theft was reported at 2:49 a.m. Tuesday, according to police records.

Droscoski said a high-speed chase followed from Maalaea to Lahaina and Kapalua before police stopped the truck with help from OnStar, which used a security system in the vehicle to disable it.

When police made contact with Hirashima, “he was initially uncooperative and would not open the car door,” Droscoski said.

“The police had to break through the window in order to apprehend the defendant,” she said.

Hirashima is facing a second revocation of his probation for second-degree assault, she said, and has prior convictions for five counts of first-degree criminal trespassing, contempt of court, violating an order for protection, failure to appear and interfering with reporting an emergency.

If convicted in his latest case, he could face a mandatory minimum prison term of three years and four months, Droscoski said.

Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for Hirashima to be released on his own recognizance. He is homeless and unemployed, Pannell said.

Judge Lauren Akitake increased bail to $20,000 for Hirashima. He was ordered to have no contact with the vehicle owner and to stay away from his residence.
