Molokai Middle School pivots to distance learning

The Maui News

Molokai Middle School, one of many Hawaii public schools that’s seen an increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, has pivoted to distance learning this week.

Principal Kainoa Pali told parents and guardians in a letter that the school would not be able to follow the bell schedule with distance learning due to staff shortages. Teachers and students were using Google Classrooms to upload and retrieve assignments.

According to the state Department of Education’s website, Molokai Middle School has reported 24 COVID-19 cases since the start of May as cases continue to rise statewide.

Molokai had 40 cases over the past week, according to state Department of Health data.

Free COVID-19 tests are being distributed at Grab and Go meal venues at other schools from Tuesday through Friday, according to Pali’s letter. The distribution locations, which are also offering meals for Molokai Middle School students, include:

• Kilohana Elementary School, 11:35 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Follow the red cones.)

• Kaunakakai Elementary School, 11 to 11:45 a.m., back of cafeteria.

• Molokai High School cafeteria, 11 to 11:45 a.m., back of cafeteria.

• Maunaloa Elementary School, 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the fence garden/entryway.

Parents and guardians were told to call (808) 774-8500 if they needed assistance with getting devices or a Mi-Fi hotspot for students, as well as counseling/assignment assistance.

The last day of school for Molokai Middle School students is May 26, according to the school’s website.
