State lawmakers passed two bills from the Senate Women's Legislative Caucus package that aim to hold educational institutions accountable in Title IX cases and expand opportunities for incarcerated women.
House Bill 1775 requires annual reporting by the University of Hawaii, state Department of Education and Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission to the Legislature on the number and types of Title IX cases and other relevant information, according to a news release from the Senate on Wednesday. It also appropriates funds to the Department of Education for equity training.
Senate Bill 2637, meanwhile, mandates a community-based work furlough program for incarcerated women in the state.
"These bills give women across many intersections of society expanded opportunity for upward mobility," said Sen. Rosalyn Baker, who represents South and West Maui's District 6 and chairs the Women's Legislative Caucus. "It has always been a goal of the women's legislative caucus to lift everyone up, including the least of us. These bills do just that."
Both measures passed third reading in both the Senate and the House and will be sent to the governor's desk for consideration, the news release said.
