East Maui water talk to be held Monday

The Sierra Club Maui Group is hosting a virtual “East Maui Water Roundtable Discussion” beginning at 6:30 p.m. Monday via the club’s Facebook page.

Speakers will include Maui County Council Member Shane Sinenci, who holds the East Maui residency seat; Jonathan Scheuer, a natural resource conflict consultant and water policy expert at the state Department of Hawaiian Homelands; and Lu’ukia Nakanelua, a post juris doctor law fellow at the Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian law.

The discussion, which will last until 8 p.m., will focus on the status of East Maui water and how people can restore community control “over our most precious resource,” according to a news release.

Sierra Club Maui has been focusing on the 30-year water leases for streams in East Maui along with Sinenci’s resolution for a charter amendment to establish an East Maui Community Water Authority.
