A Kahului man was charged with habitually driving under the influence of alcohol following his arrest Tuesday afternoon at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
Case Sonis, 40, was sleeping in the driver's seat of a white Toyota Avalon that had its engine running when police responded to the campus at 4:32 p.m., according to a declaration filed in court to support charges against him.
Two open beer containers were in cup holders in the center console, the declaration said.
When Sonis couldn't complete field sobriety tests, police determined he was impaired and couldn't drive a vehicle safely, according to the declaration.
He was charged with the felony offense of habitually driving under the influence of alcohol based on DUI convictions in 2017 and 2018.
Sonis also was charged with driving without a license and having an open alcohol container in a vehicle.
He was released on supervision when he appeared Wednesday in Wailuku District Court.
