Westbound lane of Hana Highway reopens after car collides with pole

The westbound lane of Hana Highway through Paia town has reopened after a car collided into a power pole shortly after 1 p.m. Friday.

The crash forced the closure of Hana Highway fronting Paia Bay in both directions, according to police. Shortly after 2 p.m., the road was shut down into Paia at Hana and Haleakala highways, with all traffic directed mauka onto Haleakala Highway or back onto Hana Highway going to Kahului.

Hawaiian Electric Co. crews were being escorted into the affected area, police said.

At around 4:30 p.m., the county announced that westbound traffic was open through Paia town on Hana Highway. All eastbound traffic was being routed through the Paia Bypass down Baldwin Avenue.
