Maui Health is now providing Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 6 months through 5 years old, the hospital operator announced Tuesday.

Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, which are available for children ages 6 months to 4 years old, include three total doses in the primary series, with at least three weeks between the first and second dose and at least eight weeks between the second and third dose, per U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance.

Moderna vaccines, which are available for children ages 6 months to 5 years old, include a total of two doses in the primary series given at least four weeks apart.

Parents or legal guardians may select between the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine upon their arrival to the appointment, based on available supply, Maui Health said. Once the first dose is administered, all subsequent doses must match the vaccine used in the initial dose. Mixing and matching of vaccines, whether Pfizer or Moderna, is not allowed for this age group. For ages 6 and older, only the Pfizer vaccine is available at Maui Health.

Walk-ins are welcome, but parents or legal guardians are strongly encouraged to make an appointment and complete the pre-registration paperwork prior to bringing in their children for vaccination. Appointments can be made at vams.cdc.gov.
