Man faces vehicle break-in charges

WAILUKU — A man was arrested for allegedly illegally entering two vehicles Tuesday and brandishing a knife while challenging another man to a fight.

Ikaika Santos, 32, of Kula is charged with two counts of first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, first-degree terroristic threatening and fourth-degree theft.

At about 11 a.m. Tuesday, he was seen entering a Costco cargo truck, taking a fire extinguisher from the cab and trying to hide it under the vehicle, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges. He ran after being confronted by a Costco employee but left his backpack in the cab. A high school plaque with Santos’ name engraved on it was found in the backpack, police reported.

At 4:50 p.m., Santos was seen rummaging through a vehicle in the parking lot of Acura of Maui at 404 Kele St. in Kahului, according to the declaration. After a manager confronted Santos, he brandished a pocket knife while taking a fighting stance and challenging the manager to a fight, according to the declaration.

Police arrested Santos at the car dealership at 5:48 p.m.

Bail was set at $3,000 for Santos.
