Maui County is asking residents to report significant property damage caused by large surf and swells this month, the Maui Emergency Management Agency announced Wednesday.
Residents can use an online form to document and report large surf damage. The form can be found at crisistrack.com/public/mauiHI/request.html.
A south swell that state and federal officials described as "historic" swept through the islands over the weekend, washing over low-lying coastal roads, beaches, backyards, businesses and even crashing over a multi-story building on Hawaii island. On Maui, some beachfront restaurants had to close to clean up debris, while on Lanai, nearly 90 people were stranded for a night after the ferry was forced to cancel its trip back to Maui due to unsafe ocean conditions.
"Maui County needs this information from our residents to make the best case possible for federal assistance to help pay for property and infrastructure damage caused by large surf and swells," Mayor Michael Victorino said in a news release Wednesday. "The Maui Emergency Management Agency will use the information to complete a damage assessment for the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to determine whether the county is eligible to receive federal funding."
