Maui gas prices up as national rates drop

Kahului gas prices continued to hover near record levels this week even as rates across the state “dropped very slightly” and some states saw double-digit price reductions, according to the AAA Hawaii Weekend Gas Watch.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Kahului was $5.78 as of Thursday, three cents higher than last week, eight cents higher than last month and $1.73 higher than a year ago. It’s slightly before Kahului’s record of $5.81 set on July 4.

Statewide, Kahului trailed only Lihue, where the average price was $5.83.

“Gas prices in Maui and Kauai are now on par with several California metro gas price averages after California experienced major gas price decreases of about 50 cents over the last three weeks,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager.

Hilo followed at $5.63 a gallon, while Honolulu was averaging $5.50.

As a state, Hawaii’s average gas prices were $5.59, one cent less than last week and still higher than the average national price of $4.44, which is down 17 cents from a week ago.
