Maui’s July 4 gas prices set new record

The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Kahului rose to $5.81 on Fourth of July, a new record for the area as gas prices across Hawaii continue to hover at high levels despite significant drops in other states, according to the AAA Weekend Gas Watch released on Thursday.

As of Thursday, Kahului’s average price was $5.78, three cents higher than last week, 18 cents higher than last month and $1.75 higher than a year ago.

Lihue led the state with an average price of $5.87 as of Thursday, followed by Hilo at $5.65 and Honolulu at $5.51.

As a state, Hawaii is averaging $5.62, which is two cents more than last week and matched the new record for the state set on July 4.

Meanwhile, the average national price is $4.75, down 11 cents from a week ago.

“Strong holiday travel demand from continued increased tourism in the state is likely the reason that gas prices continue to be high in Hawaii,” said Liane Sumida, AAA Hawaii general manager.
