A 46-year-old Kihei man who died after losing control of his motorcycle and crashing into a vehicle on Kuikahi Drive in Wailuku on Friday afternoon has been identified as Jeremy Caballero, police said Saturday night.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2012 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Kuikahi Drive at a high rate of speed when the operator lost control and both he and the motorcycle fell over, police said early Saturday morning. The motorcyclist then slid on the roadway and collided into a 2021 Tesla sedan that was stopped for traffic in the center median waiting to enter the westbound lane of Kuikahi Drive. The crash occurred at about 5:22 p.m. at the intersection with Laa Street, according to police.
The motorcyclist sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room, where he died of his injuries, police said.
The Tesla driver, a 58-year-old Wailuku man, did not report any injuries.
Police said the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Due to information gathered during the preliminary investigation, traffic investigators suspect that the speed of the motorcycle was a contributing factor in the crash.
The involvement of drugs and alcohol has yet to be determined, as the investigation is ongoing.
This is Maui County’s 13th traffic fatality of 2022, compared to eight at the same time last year.
