Bail reduced for Kula man who fired shots into home

WAILUKU — A man was seen firing 10 to 20 shots from what appeared to be a semiautomatic rifle into the residence of his ex-girlfriend in Haiku before he was apprehended Monday, a deputy prosecutor said.

While the ex-girlfriend wasn’t at her cottage, five people were in the main house at the front of the property on Apala Place and ran to take cover when the shooting occurred at 1:36 p.m. Monday, said Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent.

He said defendant Shawn Medeiros, 55, of Kula had been seen pulling up in a vehicle on the shared driveway of the residences and brandishing what appeared to be an AR-15-style rifle.

Police found multiple bullet entrance holes in the ex-girlfriend’s residence as well as exit holes in the rear of the residence, Kent said. Police reported finding 17 .233-caliber shell casings on the ground at the residence.

During Medeiros’ initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court, Kent asked for bail to be reduced to $250,000 from the $755,000 set by police, who had charged Medeiros with attempted murder.

While he isn’t facing that charge, “he still poses a high level of dangerousness to the community,” Kent said.

Medeiros was charged with first-degree terroristic threatening, first-degree reckless endangering, first-degree criminal property damage, keeping a loaded firearm in an improper place, keeping ammunition in an improper place, first-degree resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, manufacturing, purchasing or obtaining firearm parts to assemble a firearm having no serial number, prohibited possession of a firearm, violating a restraining order, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and leaving the scene of a collision involving damage to a vehicle or property.

Medeiros was arrested after police reported seeing and trying to stop his BMW sport utility vehicle on Crater Road in Kula at 5:37 p.m. Monday.

Kent said Medeiros drove recklessly and struck another vehicle as he fled from officers before ending up back at Medeiros’ residence on Lower Kula Road. He was arrested there as he tried to run into the residence, police said.

Police executed search warrants for Medeiros, his vehicle and residence, finding a disassembled AR-15 with a round in the chamber in his vehicle along with an ammunition magazine and crystal methamphetamine, Kent said. He said rounds of ammunition were found in the residence.

The rifle was unserialized and unregistered and made from a home-built receiver, Kent said.

Court records show a petition for a temporary restraining order was filed against Medeiros last week by the caretaker of the property where Medeiros lived.

Medeiros has prior convictions for violating an order for protection, leaving the scene of a collision involving damage to a vehicle or property and driving under the influence of an intoxicant, Kent said.

Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for lower bail of $50,000.

Judge Blaine Kobayashi set bail at $250,000.
