First Chick-fil-A in state to open on Maui Sept. 1
The first Chick-fil-A restaurant on Maui and in the state will open on Sept. 1 in Kahului, according to a news release Wednesday morning.
The eatery famous for its chicken is located at 14 Hookele St. across from Zippy’s. It will be open for dine-in, drive-thru and takeout service from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Customers may also place orders for a drive-thru pickup on the restaurant’s app.
The restaurant is 5,013 square feet and also has a 900-square-foot patio. Inside the restaurant seats 114 people, while the exterior patio can seat 46. The restaurant will feature “subtle design touches to honor the local culture and community including Hawaiian language, native landscaping and local design motifs.”
Sean Whaley is the independent franchised owner/operator of Chick-fil-A Kahului. He will be responsible for all day-to-day activities of the business, including overseeing around 160 full- and part-time “team members.”
Whaley has planted roots on Maui with his wife, Danielle, and three children.
“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to open the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Hawaii and to share our signature hospitality and great-tasting food with guests in Kahului,” Whaley said.
At the drive-thru, staff will greet customers in person and take orders on a tablet. Another will take payment, allowing vehicles to move through more quickly than they do at a traditional speaker box drive-thru, according to the news release.
Chick-fil-A partnered with clothing brands that design cooling vests and moisture-wicking uniforms for those who work in the drive-thru.
The restaurant is also making some donations to the community, including $25,000 to the Maui Food Bank and a $300,000 “True Inspiration Awards” grant to The Maui Farm.
It is also recognizing 100 local heroes making an impact in the area by providing them with free Chick-fil-A meals for a year.
The restaurant is also participating in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table Program which redirects surplus food from the restaurant to local soup kitchens, shelters, food banks and nonprofits in need.
Chick-fil-A plans to open up several restaurants in the state over the next five years. The company is based in Atlanta. It has more than 2,700 restaurants in 47 states, along with Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Canada.
