Kihei downed poles
Hawaiian Telcom crews work at the Kihei intersection of Piilani Highway and Kaiwahine Street Friday morning.
A downed pole caused a pair of lines to fall across the two thoroughfares, forcing all traffic on Piilani Highway to be rerouted to South Kihei Road.
The closure which began around 3 a.m. Friday caused long backups of vehicles headed in and out of Kihei. The roadway was re-opened around 2 p.m.
Hawaiian Telcom spokeswoman Ann Nishida said they are not sure why the pole fell as it was in the wee hours of the morning. She said the goal is to open roads as soon as it is safe to do so, but in this case they had to hire a contractor to help with repairs as special equipment was needed to dig a hole to plant the new pole, as they had to dig through rock.
Due to the road closures and mechanical problems, curbside rubbish collections in Kihei, including Maui Meadows, have been rescheduled for today, according to the county.
