Police are investigating murder in the death of a 49-year-old man who was found dead last week at Kamaole Beach Park I in Kihei.
He was identified as John Picano, who was known to frequent the Kihei area.
His body was found on the beach volleyball court when officers responded to the park at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
Police said the case was reclassified from an unattended death to murder after further investigation and autopsy results showed Picano died under suspicious circumstances. Police did not provide information about the cause and manner of Picano's death.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kamuela Mawae at (808) 875-5411.
People wishing to remain anonymous can call Maui Crime Stoppers at (808) 242-6966.
