Woman arrested for striking dog
A woman was arrested for allegedly repeatedly striking a dog with a machete Saturday in a Paia parking lot.
Tiare Kawaakoa, 40, of Kahului was charged with first-degree cruelty to animals.
During her initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent asked for bail to be increased from $1,000 to $5,000 for Kawaakoa.
He said the dog, Tommy Boy, was “tied up and essentially defenseless” in the Paia municipal parking lot on Hana Highway when Kawaakoa allegedly approached and struck the animal 10 to 12 times with a machete. The dog was seriously injured and it was uncertain whether it survived.
Deputy Public Defender Joan Tuers said Kawaakoa has no prior convictions and is working and pregnant. “Unfortunately, she’s not able to afford any amount of bail,” Tuers said.
Judge Chris Dunn ordered that Kawaakoa be released on supervision. She was ordered to have no contact with the dog’s owner.
