Bail set at $20,000 for Kahului man who allegedly burglarized Paia home
WAILUKU — Bail was increased to $20,000 for a man who allegedly burglarized a home, stole a beach bag from a driveway and broke into a parked vehicle in Spreckelsville and Paia over a five-day period.
Samson Bailey, 22, of Kahului was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree theft, first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, fourth-degree criminal property damage, third-degree theft and five counts of unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.
He allegedly broke into the residence on Stable Road on Thursday and rummaged through the house, Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent said during Bailey’s initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court.
On Sunday, surveillance video showed Bailey stealing a beach bag containing $1,445 in valuables from the driveway of a residence on Cane Place, Kent said. The next morning, items valued at $420 were stolen in a “smash and grab” break-in of a vehicle parked on the dirt shoulder of Paani Place, Kent said.
The rear passenger side window of the 2018 Ford Transit Connect was shattered and a purple backpack was stolen from the vehicle, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges.
Bailey was identified as a suspect and was seen wearing the backpack near the last entrance to Kanaha Beach Park in Kahului, where he was arrested Monday afternoon, according to the declaration.
He has convictions for two counts of contempt of court, failure to appear, DUI and inattention to driving, Kent said.
Noting that Bailey was charged with property crimes occurring on three dates, Kent said “the defendant is a danger to the community,” in asking that his bail be increased from $2,000 to $20,000.
Deputy Public Defender Joan Tuers asked for Bailey to be released on supervision. He is homeless but can stay with his grandmother and is looking for a job and drug treatment, she said.
Judge Blaine Kobayashi said supervised release wasn’t appropriate based on the allegations, including that the defendant committed felony offenses on three dates.
In increasing bail to $20,000, Kobayashi said the amount sought by the prosecution was a “reasonable and justifiable amount, given the seriousness” of the allegations.
“The court is clearly concerned for the safety and welfare of the public,” Kobayashi said.
