Maui County’s Department of Public Works will hold a virtual community meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday via Zoom to discuss shoreline erosion and mitigation alternatives in West Maui.

The discussion will center around Lower Honoapiilani Road at Kaopala Bay in Kahana, between the intersections of Puamana Place and Hui Road “E.”

Registration is required to attend and can be accessed at tinyurl.com/Kaopala2. Once registered, participants will be sent an email containing the meting link through the Zoom platform.

Accelerated coastal erosion near Kaopala Bay is raising concern over the structural integrity of the roadway, the county said. The Public Works Department and its consultants have developed potential alternatives to continue a route that can maintain roadway services. The department encourages the community to attend the meeting and offer comments on the mitigation alternatives as it will be considered in further project planning and implementation.

For those who cannot attend, the meeting will be recorded and posted to the county website with information on how to provide comments.

If special accommodations are requested, contact Kristi Ono at the Department of Public Works, Engineering Division office at (808) 270-7745.
