The Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort and one of Maui’s largest hotels, has wrapped up the first phase of its most extensive renovation since it launched more than 30 years ago.

Located on 40 acres fronting Wailea Beach, the resort unveiled a newly revitalized Botero Lounge; a total revamp of its exclusive Napua rooms, suites and private lounge; and the transformation of two dining venues into a brunch restaurant, ‘Ikena, and a “grab-and-gourmet” market, Loulu.

“We are thrilled to update the classic charm of Grand Wailea, while enhancing the luxury and heritage for which it is known, and to commemorate this new chapter with so many exciting activations and partnerships,” Managing Director JP Oliver said in a news release Thursday. “We look forward to finalizing all redesigned spaces and ultimately offering guests an enriched product with authentic Hawaiian experiences in our idyllic Maui setting.”

The updates to the Botero Lounge feature select outwork from Grand Wailea’s 900-piece outdoor museum, equipped with nine bronze sculptures by renowned contemporary artist, Fernando Botero, each flown in from Italy over 30 years ago. Grand Wailea, which houses the largest private collection of Botero sculptures in the world, restored the pieces to their original form as part of the wider revitalization.

Other changes centered on the Napua Tower, an exclusive enclave of hotel rooms and suites that debuted in June following a complete renovation. Guest rooms and suites were designed by Nina Chiappa Interiors to “reflect a contemporary and abstracted Hawaiian theme revolving around land and water,” according to the resort.

Two of the resort’s former food and beverage venues also got a refresh. ‘Ikena, which can mean a view, seeing or knowing, is the name of the new brunch restaurant, an indoor-outdoor venue. Every Saturday, ‘Ikena will host a rose brunch in partnership with Black-owned premium rose label La Fete du Rose, offering local favorites such as Maui honey fried chicken and waffles, Hawaiian sweet bread French toast and eggs benedict Kona crab cake.

Artisanal cafe-market concept Loulu was named after the only species of palm tree that’s native to the state and can be found throughout the property. The refurbished market with high-top counter seating offers health and wellness-focused foods and beverages, including artisanal pizza, hand-crafted acai bowls and fresh-brewed local coffee. According to the resort, Loulu is the only venue on the island offering exclusive items from Los Angeles-based grocer Erewhon, such as dried chili lime mango, spirulina popcorn and chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.

With the initial renovations now complete, the Grand Wailea is continuing a transformation of its 50,000-square-foot Spa Grande, which is expected to be revealed in 2023, the resort said.

Starting at $4.62/week.
