In conjunction with the SMALL TOWN * BIG ART initiative, new partner Lana'i Culture & Heritage Center will host a free public art installation event.
Led by animation artist and Oscar contender Richard O'Connor and his Brooklyn-based team, three Lanai talk-story audio recordings will be interpreted as short, animated films to be designed over the next two to three months.
Working closely with new nonprofit Maui Public Art Corps, Hale Ho'ike'ike at the Bailey House / Maui Historical Society, Lana'i Culture & Heritage Center, and a core team of Lanai-based storytellers, the artists will create a series in celebration of Lanai's history, culture and sense of place.
The general public can participate by submitting Lanai photographs to curate a collection of 20-30 images per story to help spark ideas. Images and links can be emailed to kelly@mauipublicart.org and the collection will later be posted online for public access.
When complete, the artists will exhibit a collection of animation stills with QR codes to the animated films so that folks can learn more about the people, places and stories that live in each work of art.
