Maui Health to offer bivalent boosters once doses arrive

2 min read

The Maui Health vaccine clinic will only offer the original monovalent mRNA COVID-19 booster for children ages 5 through 11, with any existing booster dose appointments for those 12 and older to be rescheduled as soon as the new bivalent booster is available on Maui.

The clinic will also continue to administer first, second and third doses to individuals 6 months of age and older.

Maui Health made the announcement on Friday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention backed the use of bivalent COVID-19 boosters from Pfizer-BioNTech for people ages 12 and older and from Moderna for people ages 18 and older. The bivalent boosters include some of the original formula of the COVID-19 vaccine as well as new protection against the most recent omicron subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5.

The state Department of Health said Thursday that it expected its initial orders of 37,800 doses of bivalent boosters to arrive in the coming days. Maui Health's vaccine clinic will administer the updated booster shots as soon as they are received, which could be as soon as Sept. 9, Maui Health said.

Per the FDA, individuals 12 years of age and older are eligible for a single booster dose of the bivalent Pfizer vaccine, while individuals ages 18 and older are eligible for a single booster dose of Moderna's bivalent vaccine, if it has been at least two months since they completed their primary vaccination or have received the most recent booster dose with any authorized or approved monovalent COVID-19 vaccine.

Since it opened its vaccine clinic in December 2020, Maui Health has administered nearly 86,000 vaccines. The clinic is open weekly on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m.
