Maui police arrested a student who was found with a pellet gun on a bus heading to Maui High School on Wednesday morning, according to police and the state Department of Education.
No one was hurt in the incident and no lockdown was needed on campus, as the incident occurred off campus, the DOE said. However, there is an increased security presence on the campus today as a precaution, DOE said in a letter to Maui High families and community members.
DOE told The Maui News that another student had called their mom and told her that they thought they saw a kid on the bus with a gun.
The Maui Police Department was notified, and police intercepted two school buses coming in from Kihei between Kahului School and Maui High School. The male student was identified, and police did a search.
MPD said that around 7:30 a.m., Juvenile Crime Protection Division investigators recovered a pellet gun and 1.35 grams of marijuana and placed the 15-year-old student under arrest for first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug.
The juvenile was released into the Sheriff’s Department’s custody pending a hearing, police said in a news release.
The DOE said in its letter to families that Maui High will have counseling services available to any student who may want to talk to someone about the incident.
