In the general election, voters will get to decide on more than a dozen ballot proposals that could change the way county government works. Here's what Maui County's auditor had to say this week on how much more each charter amendment is expected to cost the county annually:
• Proposal 1, on creating a new Housing Department, $2 million.
• Proposal 2, on creating a Department of 'Oiwi Resources, $400,000.
• Proposal 3, on ethics and financial disclosures, less than $25,000.
• Proposal 4, on planning commissions and community plan updates, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 5, on the council's organizational meeting, remote access and government records, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 6, on fines and penalties, less than $25,000.
• Proposal 7, on administrative department heads, less than $25,000.
• Proposal 8, on the county clerk, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 9, on the police chief, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 9A (council's alternative), on the police chief, less than $25,000.
• Proposal 10, on an independent nomination board, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 10A (council's alternative), on an independent nomination board, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 11, on the impacts of charter amendments on county taxation and spending, less than $100,000.
• Proposal 12, on Maui County community water authorities, unknown cost.
• Proposal 13, on promoting climate change adaptation, less than $100,000.
